There Is Nothing New Under The Sun

Opening Scripture

“All things are wearisome; Man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor is the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, “See this, it is new”? Already it has existed for ages Which were before us.”

Ecclesiastes 1:8-10  NASB

A Reflection On Time & Eternity

In this passage, Solomon reflects on the cyclical nature of life—the actions and events that repeat across generations. Everything we experience has, in some form, already happened before. The things we do, the challenges we face, and the joys we celebrate are part of a continuum of human experience.

What makes this reflection so compelling is the lens of time. The sun rises and sets in a pattern unchanged for thousands of years, witnessing the rise and fall of empires, the fleeting lives of billions, wars and peace, hope and despair. Through it all, humanity repeats its story.

Consider this: the average life expectancy in the United States as of 2023 is about 78.4 years. The world, in its current form, has existed for roughly 6,000 to 10,000 years. Compared to the span of eternity, even these millennia are but a moment. Our individual lives—mere decades—are like drops in an ocean of time.

This perspective underscores an important truth: time is an incredibly precious commodity; one we cannot afford to squander. Yet, so often, we fall into a mindset of “saving” life for some distant future—retirement at 60 or 65, or perhaps some milestone yet to come. We work hard now so that we can “really live” later. But why is our focus so fixed on this brief chapter of our existence?

Imagine a 100-foot rope laid out on the ground. The first three inches are wrapped with red tape, representing your entire lifetime compared to all of time. That red-taped segment—your life here on earth—is minuscule. The vast remainder stretches endlessly before and beyond us.

Why then do we focus so intently on this small section? Yes, life demands responsibility and attention. We have families to support, jobs to do, and bills to pay. These are real and important. But if we fail to recognize the brevity of our earthly lives, we risk neglecting the far greater span of eternity that awaits.

So, here is the challenge: live for God today. Fulfill your responsibilities with diligence and care. But do not lose sight of what truly matters beyond the fleeting moments of this life. Our earthly days are short and fleeting—yet eternity is vast and unending.

Let us choose to invest our limited time wisely, aligning our daily actions with the eternal purpose for which we were created. In doing so, we honor not just the life we’ve been given, but the timeless hope that sustains us.
