Each year at work, we are required to fill out a self-evaluation. We are asked questions such as, “How have you improved in your job in the last year? What goals do you have for your job in the next 5 years?” At some point toward the end of the evaluation, I found the appropriate place to comment that my ultimate boss was God, and I performed my work in an effort to glorify Him.
The comment is valid. We, even those who work inside the home, have God as our ultimate boss. Paul made this clear in Colossians 3:23, where he said, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” While I haven’t always viewed my job in this way, I have for many years and it is helpful.
Each day I work in the hospital laboratory, I try to remember that each patient I care for (not directly, but indirectly) is someone’s mother, father, sister, or brother. I want to give them the very best of my abilities. I want to please my boss with my efforts.
Incidentally, this has helped me through the seasons when my human boss wasn’t the kind of person I preferred to work for. After all, when I seek my best while looking toward my heavenly boss, my earthly boss reaped the benefits.
I’m also reminded of when I told our sons that I didn’t have any preference for the type of job they should do. However, regardless of their choice, I wanted them to be the very best they could be.
After all, this pleases the Boss.
